Here is the deal:
  1. No new registration is required. Just sign in with your Twitter account and authorize the NinevehGL Forum.
  2. Once you’re in, you'll be able to "Follow a Thread", that means every time that thread receive a new post or update you'll receive a mention on your twitter.
  3. Besides, you can enable "Auto Share", then every new post and/or thread you make will be tweeted on your timeline. (By default, auto-share is enabled only for your threads)

Forum Rules:

1. We understand human comunication can become "hot" sometimes. So some insults and bad words ARE allowed. Just don't push too much being an asshole all the time.

2. SPAMMERS are not allowed. There are penalties for this kind of user and they can be banned forever.

3. You can report other users, if you judge necessary. An user reported many times by many people can also be banned forever. However you can also receive penalties for report deliberately for no apparent reason.

If there is a similar thread title, make sure the other one doesn't already have the answer you're looking for.

Selecting a "surface" (coplanar/non-coplanar)

Hello,

I have exported the model of a living room from SketchUp using NinevehGL and am now using this in my iPad app. I'm now interested in being able to select a "surface" in this model. The surface can be coplanar (contiguous set of polygons) or can be non-coplanar (due to furniture or construction detail of the room).

My question is, how can I model such a surface using NinevehGL?

Thanks

If your 3D file already face surface, it's OK, because NinevehGL will create a NGLSurface for each surface/group in the file.

However if your file doesn't have it already... well, will be almost impossible to make it manually in the code, because you need to know the mesh structure, know all its indices, vertices, etc.

Thanks for the reply.

My 3D file has the surface. I can see the walls, floor, ceiling being imported correctly (as they should be). How do I overlay a rectangle of the length selected by user to say for example, select an area of the floor? Do I create another mesh?

Hello,

That's the point. NinevehGL is not a modelling engine now. You can't create meshes manually inside the code, it's extremely painful. All the meshes must come from 3D files.

Letting the user select a predefined mesh, the whole mesh, is very simple. Letting the user select a predefined surface of the mesh is also simple. However, dynamically selecting a surface that does not exist yet is so painful as creating a mesh manually.

Can a predefined mesh be modified by a user?

Theoretically yes, but in fact it's extremely pailful to do that with NinevehGL, because as I said, it's not made to be a modelling engine. Maybe in the future this might came handful, but no real plans for that now.

Changing a mesh or creating a mesh will result in the same process. You must know all the vertices, the texture coordinates, the normals, the surfaces and its indices... really painful to do manually.

NinevehGL is a 3D engine built right on top of OpenGL ES and it uses all the programmable pipeline power, making it easy for you to create great application with shaders.
